Båsenberga Poorhouse
Båsenberga was established as the parish's poorhouse for the poor in 1877. At that time, the Swiss Cloetta brothers founded a chocolate factory in Malmö, and a currency union was formed between Sweden, Denmark and Norway, where the riksdaler was replaced by the krona. Levi Strauss began selling jeans in the USA, the office of prime minister was introduced, and the company LM Eriksson was founded. The average life expectancy in Sweden was just under 40 years, the annual salary for an industrial worker was just under 200 SEK, and the metric system was introduced, replacing measurements such as the foot and the cubit.
The poorhouse housed about 60–70 horses who worked on the 25-hectare self-sufficient farm. The barn, now the golf clubhouse, housed livestock and the lake was used for fishing. There was also a lice shed, now a flower shed, where horses were quarantined in case of lice infestation, as well as a food cellar and morgue, now a compost heap.
The poorhouse housed characters, just like in the story of Emil, where there was a commandora named Grin-Maja. She also had help from Linke-Per and their lives have left their mark in our Magazine. In the Main House was the common dining room and the men also lived here. Women and children lived in the autumn sun and in the Wing lived the husbands and those who were called "tokar". The houses have been preserved and adapted to the activities that have been carried out over the years since then.
The fascinating story behind Båsenberga
From poverty-stricken home to retirement home
During the early 1900th century, Båsenberga was developed into Vingåker's retirement home. The home was highly appreciated by the elderly because they enjoyed all the green areas.
The one who probably enjoyed it the most was the tailcoat tailor Calle Kreü, who at the age of 85 still sat cross-legged on the tailor's table without any hindrance. He was an old tailor who always walked around in a suit and a pincushion. When the retirement home was later moved to the center of Vingåker, he constantly escaped back to this beautiful farm. Here he lived on fish that he caught in the lake and raw eggs that he washed down with brandy. He lived in the barn because he absolutely could not adapt to what was seen as a normal life.
Legend tells us that he is one of those who still walks around here at Båsenberga today.
From course building to hotel & conference
In 1973 the farm was converted into a training facility, owned by TBV, and in 2005 the property was transferred to private ownership. Under the leadership of Maria and Thomas, Båsenberga was renovated into what is today a prominent hotel and conference facility. Since July 1, 2022, Båsenberga has been run by the Danielsson family, who continue to develop the facility and its operations.
Vingåker Golf Club
Vingåkers Golf Club was founded in 1986, and just three years later the club's 9-hole course was inaugurated. Just in time for the club's 20th anniversary in 2006, a complete 18-hole course was opened, which is today hailed as "One of Sweden's unknown gems" by the magazine Svensk Golf. At Båsenberga we have a close collaboration with the golf club and offer attractive golf packages with accommodation for those of you who want to combine your stay with a round on this beautiful course.
